Glenn Sather and "the big deal": "since going to New York, the only significant move he's made was for Eric Lindros and that was after he'd fiddled around so long trying to get the price down on Jaromir Jagr that he missed him. Now obviously the above analysis has the potential to look ridiculous if and when he pulls off the Pavel Bure deal or some other blockbuster to help his Rangers make the playoffs." (Vancouver Province)

"The question that should be consuming Glen Sather at the moment isn't whether he would be giving up too much for Pavel Bure but whether he ought to acquire Bure at any price." (Faceoff.com)

Fitzgerald traded: The Nashville Predators Wednesday traded their captain, Tom Fitzgerald, to the Chicago Blackhawks for a fourth-round draft pick in 2003. That is the best they could get for their captain? Does not look good for Tennessee...

Canadian teams' woes growing, trades may be the only salvation: "The National Hockey League regular season ends one month from tomorrow, and at the moment matters could hardly look bleaker for Canadian teams... It seems only weeks ago that Canadian hockey fans were positively gloating with their prospects, the Calgary Flames and Montreal Canadiens the delight of the early going, the Toronto Maple Leafs and Ottawa Senators certain to reach the post-season, the Edmonton Oilers coming on strong in the West and the Vancouver Canucks still with ample time to get their act together for another valiant run in the playoffs. Unfortunately, it is today one week short of spring: time for a reality check." (Roy MacGregor, National Post)

Caps blow another one: "In their final game at home before heading out for an eight-game road trip, the Capitals could not stop the Stars on Tuesday night, losing 5-2." (Washington Post)
Bowman's take: Hear what Scotty Bowman thinks about the playoff chase.

Rangers-Stars trade: The New York Rangers traded forwards Manny Malhotra and Barrett Heisten to the Dallas Stars on Tuesday for forwards Martin Rucinsky and Roman Lyashenko. (AP)

Rucinsky is a floater, and set to be an unrestricted free agent this summer. I've necer heard of Heisten. Lyashenko and Malhotra are both kids with great potential as yet unrealized. Who wins this trade? Nobody yet.

Another goal-scoring goalie: San Jose Sharks goaltender Evgeni Nabokov scored a goal as the Sharks clobbered the Vancouver Canucks last night.

Hasek quieted: Hasek's homecoming to Buffalo did not go well. Looking like a deer in the headlights, he got torched. The "Dominator" was pulled 40 minutes into a 5-1 Detroit loss.

He deserves better: Mike Vernon is getting the shaft in Calgary. The Calgary Flames sent veteran goalie Mike Vernon down to the AHL on Saturday and recalled another veteran, Kay Whitmore, who happens to suck like a black hole, to take his place. Vernon is in the final year of a contract that pays him $2.75 million and can become an unrestricted free agent after this season. The Flames placed him on waivers for the second time in just over a month, but he cleared at noon on Saturday enabling them to send Vernon down to Saint John. If a team claimed Vernon, it would have been responsible for 25 percent of his salary. "It's obvious they're trying to dump my salary," Vernon told the Calgary Sun on Friday.
